Introduction of Darts

Darts is a popular game.  Very few people have not thrown  darts at some time or other, and large  numbers play darts in clubs, bars on a regular basis.

It is an easy game to play, but a hard game to play well.

Today's Darts

A dart has four basic parts: darts flight, darts shaft, darts barrel and a darts point.    People likes to print their picture or logo on the darts flights, darts shaft.  (     )

Darts Shafts

The darts shafts are made of various materials, including aluminum, glass fiber and cane. At the top of the shaft is an 'x'-shaped incision to take a flight which folds flat and unfolds

Darts Flights

The darts flights are made of polyester or plastic.  Few darts players worry about the shape of their flight:  they are more interested in the design, which is usually colorful and interesting.(

Choosing your Darts

The vast majority of darts players throw tungsten darts. Tungsten darts in weight of 18 to 26 grams.  This applies equally to men and women.

How high?  How long?

The dimensions of the playing area are straightforward.  The board must be hung with the centre of the bulls-eye 1.73m (5ft 8 in) above a point on the floor which is level with the area on which the player stands.  The face of the board must be 2.37 m (7ft 91/4 in) from the back of the 'oche'.  The oche should be 610 mm (2ft exactly) across and 38 mm (1 1/2 in) high.

Stance - Straight on

Tom Barrett, the best darts player in the world in the mid-1960s. used to stand upright, as still as a statue, with his feet close together and his toes pointing through the oche at right angles to and towards the board.  When he threw, his trunk did not move.

Stance - Sideways

Darts player plants his feet parallet to the oche with his shoulder pointing towards the board.  This enables him to put more weight on his leading foot (his right foot if he is right-handed and vice versa) and to lean forwards when he throws.

Stance - Best foot forward

Darts player places his leading foot against the oche at about 45° to it.  His back footis half off the floor when he throws, with only the ball of the foot anchored.

Standard Darts Rule

There are really only two games played in English style darts: "01" and "Cricket".  There are variations on the themes, but basically this is it.

301 and 501

In 301, players begin with 301 points and the first player to reduce that score to exactly zero wins.  The darts that finally reduces the score to zero must be in a double scoring bed.  301 most often requires that a double be hit before a player can begin scoring.  A Player commonly does not have to identify the double for which he is trying, any will do.  when an opening double is hit, the score of the dart and any succeeding ones are counted regardless of where in the scoring surface the dart sticks.   In succeeding turns you reduce your score as quickly as possible by scoring in the highest count beds, 20 and 19.  If a player leaves himself a score of one point or scores more  points than were needed to bring the score to exactly zero, then the score reverts to what it was before the turn began.

501 is played as is 301, but most often does not require an opening double.

Cricket

"Cricket" is played is frames 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and the bulls-eye.  The object of the game is to get three "hits" in each of the playing frames.  These tree "hits" can be made with three singles; a double and a single; or a triple.  Any hits made over the required three, score the value of that bed to the player making the hits, unless the opposing player had already scored three hits thus "closing" that frame.  The player closing (scoring at least three hits in all frames) first and having the most points scored, wins.  If a player closes first but is behind in  points, they must gain the lead in points before the opponent closes.  If neither player scores, the one who closes first wins.  If both player's scores are equal and both have closed, the player who closed the most frames first wins.
